Ana Ospina
29 January to 24 February 2018

Since 2005, Ana Ospina has been developing a body of work that responds to specific environments, these spatial interventions aim to inform, surprise and inspire a sense of magic in the everyday.

Having worked to commission for many years, the purpose of this residency at Uillinn is re-configure the artist’s own direction, without the influence of a commissioning body. The timing of the residency is concurrent with a recent move back to West Cork from London, where Ana has lived and worked for the last decade, ‘I plan to create a series of test pieces as prototypes for my new body of work, using a variety of media and artistic processes that I have been experimenting with recently; including embroidery and knitting, as well as developing knowledge of processes that are new to me, by collaborating with other artists.’

The residency will reflect her homecoming and the transition from an urban to rural environment. It will be rooted in and responsive to the notion of place and will invite participation from the local community to help build a lexicon of local distinctiveness.

– Tuesday the 13th of Feb – Second Open Studio: Place
8-9pm
Ana has invited local creative practitioner Michael Stephens to talk about his work with the magical photographic process called Solargraphy. Solargraphs are photographs taken with a lensless pinhole camera with a long exposure. Through this image-capturing process the invisible movements of natural and man-made objects can be made visible in landscapes. In this way, solargraphy has the power to capture the passage of time through a place that conventional photography cannot. During this talk, Michael will explain how to make a pinhole camera and how they work. He will also share images from a large-scale art project he worked on in collaboration with artist Sheelagh Broderick in 2010. The talk will last around 15 mins with time for questions (and drinks!).

– Saturday the 17th of Feb – Third Open Studio: Homecoming
6-7pm

– Saturday the 24th of Feb – Fourth Open Studio: Growing
1-3pm
In the final event of Ana’s residency series, she invites members of the public to join her at Skibbereen Community Garden to explore the existing garden, learn about its history and discuss possibilities for future projects. Please wear suitable clothes and boots as the garden can be muddy. A pair of gardening gloves will also be useful and perhaps a small trowel or fork if you’d like to help with a bit of light maintenance work! A Community Garden is a valuable asset for people of all ages and from all walks of life. It’s also a place where members of the community can come together, share knowledge, experience and healthy food.
