Thin Places

Thin Places developed in 2024, considers the potential to find connection & joy in loss, how we might create our own ‘thin places’ (spaces where we are closer to those who have passed), by sharing the stories, dances, & music taught to us by those no longer here. Investigating our responsibility to pass on knowledge & to preserve memories. This residency will begin the second phase of the development of the work, widening the themes to include the collective grief of a world that feels increasingly more volatile & divided. Interrogating how we can come together in action & joy to create a more just & equitable world. The week will be spent working in collaboration with dancer Roberta Ceginskaite & musician Niamh Dalton, & is funded through a Dance Bursary from the Arts Council.

The aim of this residency is to continue the development of a project started this year entitled Thin Places through re-visiting material & generating new material. I intend to test some news ideas which will include: using multi-disciplinary tools (design elements & filmed projections), exploring spaces outside the dance studio, & audience interaction.

As an emerging choreographer who is looking to continue to develop this project further & outside of Galway city where I am based, the time in studio in West Cork will be invaluable to these aims. Working in a space that includes many different disciplines under one roof will allow me to consider how I might incorporate non-traditional spaces & other disciplines into my work.

Fionnuala is a dance artist & community organiser based in Galway city. She has worked in a diverse number of settings & communities within the arts world including: dance in traditional & site specific contexts, theatre, film, young people with additional needs, & International Protection Applicants. She is interested in making highly physical & socially engaged dance works in collaboration with artists from different disciplines. Fionnuala has performed for choreographers such as Maria Nillson Waller & Laura Murphy & her work has been supported by the Arts Council.
