Kate McElroy
29 June to 31 July 2020
Kate McElroy is an artist based in Cork city where she is completing a Master’s in Art and Process at Crawford College of Art and Design.
Kate’s art process is a multifaceted, rhizomatic process of enquiry. Kate weaves together different modes of questioning through a multimedia approach which evolves in an organic and fluid fashion.
She is interested in the invisible forces that shape and affect our actions and how we both affect and are affected by our environment. Space is an important component in her work and she combines photography, found materials and semi- transparent and transparent layers to evoke spatial complexity and to play with perception. She explores how these different components combine and interrelate to evoke subtle associations, and how this affects the viewer phenomenologically.
Through juxtaposing media in a playful and sometimes unorthodox manner she hopes to invite people to think creatively on the very structures of society and to open up new possibilities for reimagining. To quote journalist Thea Riofrancis ‘How the new world is born out of the old is of course the vexed question of any project of radical transformation’. By questioning and drawing attention to specific, everyday areas of the environment, but presented in unconventional ways, she invites the viewer to question their everyday interactions and to imagine new realities.
