I feel all is not as it seems. My ambition would be to make work that quietly dilutes our preconceptions of what is real and that suggests that life is perhaps more interesting and stranger than we imagine.

”Are we leading the way or are we led? Are we moving or is everything moving around us? Is the universe inside us projecting outwards? Could we be on the outside looking in? Sharing a dream and dreaming our separation?”

The aim of my residency is to encourage people to reconsider the ideas that inform their reality and to allow themselves to open up a new way of being in the world. I will attempt to do this through the following means…

* a presentation of contemplative works present at intervals in the studio space.
* a series of screenings that do not concur with mainstream narratives.
* the compilation of anomalous experiences achieved through actively interviewing participants.

The above project aligns with my work in that it pursues a place outside of established norms seeking joy, novelty, magic and meaning as tools to inform our way of being in the world. On a personal level the residency aims to bring my work and research more in alignment with things of most interest to me.

Mark Beatty has completed three residencies in the West Cork Arts Centre, Drift Junkie / The Things We Threw Away in 2018, I Can’t See The Paper from the Wood from the Trees in 2020 and The Purple Road Project in 2024. He has participated in the Skibbereen Arts Festival in 2022 with the help of the West Cork Arts Centre on the site-specific work, We Worship at the Temple.
His work has been included in group exhibitions in the LAB, TBG&S and The Douglas Hyde Gallery. He lives and works in West Cork.
