Open Studio Conversation with Lily Abichahine
Friday 28 March, 2.00pm to 3.00pm
Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre
Tribunal for an Island is a research project culminating in a citizen’s forum—a tribunal—that ponders the concept of contemporary democratic assemblies while revisiting the aesthetics of the tribunal. It creates a participatory space for islanders and mainlanders to witness island realities and reflect on governance. Rooted in artistic research on “Fiction in Art and Law,” the tribunal draws inspiration from the ancient Greek agora, the Roman forum, and clan meetings in the traditional Irish justice system under Brehon Laws. The setting fosters reflection on post-colonialism and environmental law applicable in Ireland within the framework of European and international regulations, addressing resource access and ecological issues. While reviving an old form of assembly, it also reimagines our legal and cultural relationship with water.
In this research phase, Lily is engaging with communities on Oileán Chléire and Sherkin, inviting stakeholders – islanders, fishers, farmers, artists, development workers, business owners – to discuss shared challenges. On Friday 28 March, we invite artists and those who share an interest in ecology, environment – especially the maritime environment, climate justice and socially engaged practice to come along to Uillinn, where Lily will present this research phase of her project. She will also discuss plans for the performance event to mark the end of this research phase, which will take place at Uillinn in mid April.
