4 March to 29 August 2020

Pascal Ungerer is a visual artist originally from West Cork. He recently moved back to Cork from London where completed an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University London. Pascal works across a wide range of media including, photography, video, painting, sound, text and digital collage, often combining several mediums together.
He has exhibited and screened his work through out Europe, most recently at Roman Road Gallery London, GESTE 2018 Paris, LOOP Barcelona 2018, and the Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery and the CICA Museum Korea in 2019. He has been shortlisted for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries, The Solo Award and the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize. His art practice is primarily concerned with spatial cultures in the context of peripherality, contested space, social history and geo-politics. He has a particular interest in marginal habitats, which are hidden, obsolete or dysfunctional and he will be developing aspects of this throughout his residency at the Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre.

Pascal will be working on a series of mixed media paintings during his 3 months residency and will be exploring West Cork’s place history, architecture, landscape and topography in the context of obsolescence and transience. He will be investigating the legacy of obsolete mining industries in West Cork and the residual infrastructure left behind in the context of how they fit into the landscape of West Cork as well as the socio-historical and cultural legacies of these industries and the stories behind them.
