Sorcha Browning

17 September to 19 December 2026

Sudio open to the public on Thursday and Friday

I am an artist based in West Cork working across painting, sculpture and video. I completed my BA in Visual Art at TU Dublin/BAVA Sherkin Island in 2024. The period I spent studying was informed by the island itself and this foregrounded my interest in digital systems as both the infrastructural ‘godsend’ to connectivity, whilst also, contradictorily contributing to an increased sense of isolation. What I am most interested in is the affect of this isolation, the material realities of digital infrastructures, and the residues of devotion supplanted onto technological innovation, which I see as being rooted in myth and transcendence.

During this residency I am working with paper, note fragments and screens in order to explore ideas about productivity, ‘time saving’ and competition. Through the development of multiple characters I will map the parts pertaining to each and create narratives or worlds within which they inhabit.

Over the course of the residency I will engage with others in order to generate conversations and insights into how people experience some of the overarching themes relating to this body of work. This will be through workshops, discussions and on an ongoing basis through open studio days.

My work has been exhibited in the RHA (2024) as part of the RDS Visual Art Awards, the Uillinn (2024) and on Sherkin Island as part of the OpenEar festival (2024). In 2024 I received the RDS Taylor award, the GSD Emerging Visiting Artist Award and the National Sculpture Factory/BAVA Graduate Award through the display of my video Eden., which explored cookie/data collection through a collage of video performances. In upcoming months, I will be part of a group exhibition at the Graphic Studio Gallery. This will show work developed whilst on a residency with the Graphic Studio Dublin in 2025 and is a part of a wider body of work in which this residency sits.
