MA Art and Environment

The MA Art and Environment explores contemporary art’s relationship with environments in their widest sense – ecological, spatial, political, economic and social. Through practice-based research and critical inquiry, students examine how artistic methodologies can contribute to understanding and responding to environmental change and the complex challenges of the climate and biodiversity crisis.

A key principle of the programme is ‘archipelagic thinking’, a spatial and cultural framework that emphasises relationality, locality and interconnectedness across island and coastal environments. This perspective positions West Cork not as a peripheral location but as a critical site for examining global environmental questions through situated artistic practice.

The programme also adopts a world-centred pedagogy, encouraging students to respond to real-world events and environmental conditions through artistic research and collaborative learning. This approach integrates artistic experimentation with social engagement and interdisciplinary dialogue across fields such as environmental humanities, island studies, ecology and community development.

Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre plays a key role in supporting the programme’s delivery and cultural context. The centre provides a professional arts environment in which students encounter exhibitions, public programmes and engagement with artists, curators and audiences. The centre also hosts the programme’s end-of-year graduate exhibition, offering a platform for students to present their work to local and wider audiences. Through this partnership, the MA connects academic study with the contemporary visual arts ecology of the region.

This collaboration reinforces the programme’s emphasis on socially engaged practice and on situating artistic research within real communities and landscapes. Students work alongside artists, researchers and local organisations, contributing to an interdisciplinary network that extends across West Cork and internationally.

As the first master’s-level art programmes located in West Cork, the MAAE contributes to the cultural and educational infrastructure of the region. By embedding postgraduate study within island and rural contexts, it expands access to advanced arts education while fostering dialogue between contemporary art practice, environmental awareness and local communities.
