Selma Mäkelä is based between Galway and London. Her paintings derive their subject matter from a variety of sources including taxidermic collections and archival photography. Inhabited by statues, birds, comets and fleeting moments, Mäkelä weaves these images with references to geological and meteorological phenomena to suggest obscured subtle narratives and alignments.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally including Ashford RHA Dublin; John Moores Painting Prize UK, Leeds Art Gallery UK; and Centre Cultural Irlandais Paris. Her paintings are in The Trinity College Collection, Mayo Co. Council Collection and Galway City Collection.

Selma developed this print for “Forward,” said granny in the snow – “Eteenpäin,” sanoi mummo lumessa, a two-person exhibition with Jane Hughes and curated by Paula Barrett at Uillinn in 2026, which explored landscape, memory and the vast temporal scales that underpin our world.
