The work conducted during this residency is two-fold: portraiture in landscape will be generated as well as depictions of seascapes. The portraits are images of my relatives from Schull surrounded by its stunning landscape, including Schull Harbor and Mount Gabriel. My grandmother, Sarah, was one of nineteen who left this area in 1920 for Chicago, where I was raised. She said she could not return home to West Cork, because if she did, she would never come back to the U.S. Other portraits are my students at Central Connecticut State University who face particular challenges, based on race, ethnicity, and religion, which are enacted in the rendering of surrounding ground in which they stand. The seascapes, also symbolic in nature, are part of a series entitled, “These Wine-Dark, Warming Currents”, with several images generated from the waters at Turk Harbor.
Seán Gallagher's recent work includes Emerging, a series portraying individual students from Central Connecticut State University, “emerging” or becoming, within a thematically and aesthetically linked context or background and A Child in Song, images depicting children absorbed in the act of singing.

Seán presents an Illustrated Talk which includes stories about people through their presentation in symbolic landscapes, as well as considerations of emblematic seascapes.
A native of the city of Chicago, US, Seán Gallagher attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and St. Ignatius College Prep; Indiana University (B.A. - English Literature; B.F.A. - Printmaking) and the University of Arizona (M.F.A. - Painting and Printmaking). He is Professor of Art at Central Connecticut State University since 1993. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife, Andrea, who is a staff writer at The Wall Street Journal, and his daughter, Fiona, who sings spontaneously.
