Themes of death, dying and loss

AFTER ALL is a celebration of our vulnerable and courageous existence. Solène attempts to conjure a better space to be with death, dying and loss, asking - what happens in the end. The solo dance performance masterfully invites the audience to ponder on their own mortality as well as explore how to celebrate life.

The Death Café lasts two hours and is a group directed conversation. It is a space to share any experiences, feelings or questions around death. It is not a space that offers grief support or counseling, but follows in the tradition of the Death Cafe movement (that began in 2011) and aims to host an accessible, respectful and confidential space.

The cafe can host up to 20 participants, who are welcome to discuss any aspects of death and dying that they wish to. People are also welcome to just come and listen with no pressure to contribute. There will be some time after the death café to drink tea together, and for any further informal conversations if desired.

Hosted by dancer and artist Solène Weinachter together with poet, bodyworker and celebrant Lisa Fannen

ABOUT

Solène Weinachter is an independent dancer and choreographer based in Scotland. Her artistic practice is rooted in connection with audiences using the intersection between dance, theatre, story telling, humour and what could appear as uncomfortable conversation.

Solène is a choreographer, performer and teacher based between Scotland and France. She trained at the CNR of Lyon and LCDS in London where she obtained a BA (Hons.) and an MA in contemporary dance and performance.

In the last 17 years, she has built long lasting creative relationship with Scottish Dance Theatre (Janet Smith & Joan Clevillé), Lost Dog (Ben Duke) and OD WORKS (Oona Doherty), all who have informed her practiced
based on the intersection between dance and theatre. Solène now makes shows rooted in story telling, movement and laughter. The content of the work is driven by the wish to make space for the audience to be with what could be perceived as 'uncomfortable' topics. Along the show, Solène collaborate with celebrant, poet, musician and health activist Lisa Fannen to host conversations inspired by the Death Café movement. She considers these meetings as an extension of the work on stage where she hopes to spark potential transformative conversations witnessed or joined by the participants.

Solène is also a founding member of Collective Endeavours, a Glasgow-based music and dance inter-generational collective that performs improvised pieces in non-conventional spaces in the UK and abroad. As a freelance dancer Solène has been part of projects with Gecko and Vera Tussing. Solène current's projects include touring her solo piece, AFTER ALL in Europe, the UK and China alongside researching a new show.

Lisa Fannen (she/her) is a poet/artist performing solo and in collaboration with musicians, soundmakers and dancers. She is also a bodyworker and health activist concerned with dialogue and information exchange about health as part of movement for social justice. Lisa has also trained as a celebrant and in work that is concerned with how we tend to the dead, and to grief. She has brought these facets to supporting Solène in research and making stages of AFTER ALL, including co-faciliating Death Cafes. Death Cafes are safe spaces where people can speak about any aspect of death that they want to, and are intended to accompany the touring performances as another dimension of its engagement.
