Slanted Echoes

26 to 31 October 2026

Slanted Echoes is a choreographic exploration of the innovative value of disability. In her research Bobbi Byrne explores the legacy of disabled music Icons whose impairments have not only shaped their music but greatly influenced their genres or even created their own. From Django Reinhardt’s vertical virtuosity to Moondog’s “Snaketime” and Tony Iommi’s industrial weight, disabled musicians have transformed physical impairments into innovative aesthetics.
Responding through her own disabled and asymmetric body, Bobbi will not be merely dancing to their music but exploring and translating the structural mechanics of their adaptations.

This residency aims to celebrate and communicate the often hidden legacies of disabled musician and produce a series of movement studies exploring the structural adaptations of 2-3 such musicians. Contextualize these studies in a work-in-progress performance lecture. Develop a public, mixed ability workshop that invites participants to centre their own bodies unique solutions and explore the role of impairment in the creative process.

As a dancer with a unilateral upper limb difference, adaptation and asymmetry have always been central to Bobbi’s work. There is a profound mirroring between her own practice and the adaptations of disabled musicians.

Bobbi Byrne is a disabled, transfeminine dance artist based in Dublin, Ireland. She was one of the first professional disabled dancers in the country and was a core member of Counterbalance, Ireland’s first Inclusive dance company, for over a decade. She is currently co-artistic director of Croi Glan Integrated Dance Company. Her impairment, a unilateral congenital below elbow difference (UCBED), has made her particularly interested in asymmetry and imbalance. Variations For Two Diisabled Bodies, co devised and performed with Derry based Artist Soso Ni Cheallaigh, recently won the Coisceim movement award at the 2025 Dublin Fringe Festival.
